There are really two different kinds of stories. The story and the short story are not the same thing. The former is just a story, we tell them all the time. The latter is an art. The first step to writing a short story is to write the former, the storythat version of the story that you would tell a friend. And when you write it, be sure to write it in one sitting. Just tell the story. Just get the story written down.
